Consumers Are Still Searching for Supplements to Ease Joint Pain
Glucosamine and chondroitin are natural constituents found in joint tissues. Their effect on promoting and supporting joint health is most likely due to their anti-inflammatory activity in the joint and their role in the synthesis and reparation of joint cartilage.1-4 Some controversies exist over the efficacy of the glucosamine-chondroitin combination which may dissuade some supplement manufacturers from using this dual combination in their joint health supplements. However, both glucosamine and chondroitin have been well-researched and therefore, the most popular ingredients to include in joint health supplements. There is enough indication from positive studies to suggest the efficacy of these two natural ingredients and therefore, their benefits should not be underestimated. Moreover, glucosamine and chondroitin are considered generally safe to take and not known to have any side effects when taken in recommended dosages.
Scientific Support for Glucosamine and Chondroitin
The first study using the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin as a dietary supplement for promoting joint health was published in 1969. The results of this initial study suggested that both ingredients may relieve joint pain and therefore led to more extensive investigations. Unfortunately, many of the studies that followed were flawed—they were too short, small or used differing dosages making comparison and interpretation difficult. For example, a systematic review of glucosamine and chondroitin in 2000 suggested that this combination may not only help to relieve joint pain but may also improve joint mobility. Due to the poor-quality of these trials however, interpretation of the data was difficult and results were ultimately compromised.5
In 2006, the results of the country’s first six-month large-scale study on the use of glucosamine and chondroitin called the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) were eagerly awaited both by the medical profession and consumers. In the study 1,583 people who suffered from knee osteoarthritis were divided into 5 groups and each group was assigned to one of five treatments—a placebo, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), chondroitin alone, glucosamine alone, or a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin. The results? Twenty-two percent (354) of the participants who suffered from mild to severe joint pain experienced a 20 percent reduction in joint pain as compared to the placebo group.6
In 2007, a review by Bruyere concluded that the administration of glucosamine and chondroitin may be useful as vital symptomatic therapy for osteoarthritis, showing potential for structural-modifying effects. The study suggests that a glucosamine-chondroitin joint support formula may help reduce joint pain, improve joint function and mobility as well as help prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis. 7
After performing a systematic review of treatment guidelines for osteoarthritis, the OsteoArthritis Research Society International (OARSI) consisting of 16 experts from 6 countries, released 25 evidence-based expert-consensus recommendations for osteoarthritis in February 2008. They recommended glucosamine and /or chondroitin for symptom relief of joint pain by a 63 percent majority.8
